Essay #5 for Written Comm.
The prompt: "imagine you are part of a conspiracy for World Domination. How would you use technology to help you achieve your goals.
Before
1984
This
document is a confidential article written by Arnhold Neikmizov, more commonly
known as “Big Brother.” The article was recovered by Comrade Winston, a
professional and member of resistance in the Ministry of Truth, just before its
incineration in the memory hole. With this document comes imminent danger, and
by reading it you risk imprisonment, beating and even the horrors of the
infamous Room 101. If you are to read it, avoid reading more than a few
sentences at a time in case of thought police and be sure no telescreens are in
sight. If you have read past this warning, comrade, you must know the truth.
IGNORANCE IS NOT STRENGTH.
He agreed to personally recommend my program to other countries of power, omitting any knowledge of the virus or the satellite link. Several other countries adopted the program and I followed up with the same tactics of negotiation, thus enlarging my web of power without any public knowledge. Within three years, I had control of the world’s nuclear weapons and, in turn, its leaders.
With my newly acquired status as world dictator, I started to unfurl my plan slowly, so as to avoid any revolt. With smiles and sound bytes I began broadcasting my voice and face over every television and radio station in the world. I gave great speeches with little to no true content and made grandiose plans for a communist society which I called the “new way.”
When I moved the first 10,000 people into my newly-built, government-issued apartments, they were enthralled with the telescreens periodically placed throughout the apartment. At the time they were unaware that the telescreens were broadcast not only into the apartment but out of it as well. Each new tenant was issued a job at the large office building I had built directly across from the apartment complexes, which I named the Ministry of Truth. Using psychological brainwashing techniques, I broadcast movies to promote love of my party and hatred of the imaginary “other party” that I had invented for purposes of allegiance. People wanted to believe they were in control of their own minds, and an illusion of opposition assisted that.
I was not surprised how easy it was to mold the minds of the impressionable poverty-stricken tenants, especially since they could not turn off or avoid their telescreens. I was, however, surprised by the swift effectiveness of the brainwashing programming I was broadcasting on public television. Within the year, ten such apartment complexes were constructed, along with three more divisions of the ministry.
I turned the previously existing law enforcement into a powerful ‘thought police’ whose jobs were to control any resistance to the alliance, which was now at 70% power, only 10 years after the first apartment was built. Domination was near. Employment outside my government facilities became obsolete, and alliance to the party was ever-increasing.
It was just this year I
felt the thrill of success when I looked out on my brainwashed public, all loyal
to my party and oblivious to the way I control their minds. My workers at the
Ministries of Truth, Love, Peace, and Plenty believe what I tell them. WAR IS
PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. I came to dominate their
thought and their world without suspicion. I am their God. The year is 1984.
